What types of support does the NDIS cover?
The NDIS covers supports that are reasonable and necessary and directly related to a person’s disability. This includes assistance with daily living tasks like personal care, meal preparation, and community access; consumables and low-cost assistive items; and assistive technology such as wheelchairs or communication devices. It can also fund home and living supports, including supported accommodation, respite, and home modifications, as well as therapy services like physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, psychology, and behaviour support. Transport funding may be provided for people who cannot use public transport due to their disability, and the NDIS also supports social, community, and employment participation. It generally does not cover everyday living costs, medical expenses, or anything unrelated to the person’s disability.
How can I apply for the NDIS?
How is NDIS funding determined?
NDIS funding is determined by looking at your individual needs and making sure the supports are reasonable and necessary for your disability. During your planning meeting, the NDIA reviews how your disability affects your daily life, your goals, and what supports will help you be safer, more independent, and more connected to the community. They also consider reports from therapists or health professionals that describe your functional capacity. Funding is then allocated across areas like daily living, assistive technology, therapies, and community participation. The amount you receive isn’t based on your income or financial situation—it’s based on the level of support you need because of your disability.
